Archeologically important artifacts provide a glimpse into the rich art and culture of that country. These artifacts change with time and therefore need proper consideration. Today the world is going digital…so why not Cultural Heritage...

Many objects of cultural heritage have become fragile over their lifespans and are in danger of being lost forever and others have become indecipherable to the human eye. As such, applying scientific imaging techniques is vital to both their preservation and understanding. Two such instances of this are the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Herculaneum Scrolls.
The Dead Sea Scrolls are an example of preserving these subjects, as even though the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 is generally considered the greatest archaeological event of the 20th century, much of the final collection is but fragments of what they once were. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), with the help of Google, undertook the daunting task of imaging and making available to the public the entire collection. This digital collection hosts “about 930 manuscripts, comprising thousands of Dead Sea Scrolls fragments, in high-resolution and multiple spectra.” The General Director of the IAA, Shuka Dorfman, describes the scrolls as an “unrivalled cultural heritage treasure which belongs to all of us” and the images can be viewed for free at https://www.deadseascrolls.org.il/home
The Herculaneum Scrolls show us how with modern imaging techniques we can investigate objects of cultural heritage in a way we never could before. Scrolls from the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum were caught in a volcanic eruption, burning and fusing them into something near-unrecognizable as a repository of ancient knowledge. Dr. Brent Seales, at the University of Kentucky, leads a team who employs computer-tomography (CT) scanning and X-rays to image the interior of the charred scrolls so that they may be digitally unraveled and read. For today, a tragically comic anecdote from the land where 17.71% of this world's population lives and the highest number of youth as well.

This happened last year in Kolkata...While marveling at the beauty of Victoria Memorial and pondering over its enormous history, I heard three random young tourists say "abey yaar issey acha to ham log red bull ka can khareed kar pee lete"
(Dude, we could have had a can of red bull instead of buying tickets for this)
I was just speechless. Whose fault is it? Or should it be simply ignored?

PS: The price of ticket per person is 30/- INR (38 cents of €); price of 1 can of red bull is 90/- (1.14€) CHANGE can only be brought completely by bringing a CHANGE in the attitude of people towards Cultural Heritage and I pledge to be a proponent of this CHANGE.

In all its simplicity the word “change” can be appreciated in different ways. For the 15 enthusiasts of CHANGE-ITN it has a special meaning. Color, materials, volume, chemical compositions, perception of the value and aesthetics are examined by imaging and analytical techniques so as to advance Cultural Heritage Analysis for New GEneration and lead in innovative modifications of current technologies for revising and transitioning the changes that tangible cultural heritage encounter’s through time.

This year marks the 500 anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death. He was one of the worlds greatest minds and his work is constantly being studied by scientists, conservators and curators.
Using a range of techniques, like infrared reflectography and hyperspectral imaging, heritage scientists have found that behind his famous painting “The Virgin of the Rocks”, lies a completely different preparatory design. This confirms Leonardo’s relentless creativity, constantly changing and adapting.
